Installing Prefabricated Cable Assemblies (machine swage)

Step 1: Disassembly

To dissemble, start with the turnbuckle and unscrew the cable end or ends, then unscrew the jaw or termination stud from the other end of the turnbuckle. (this may be done at the same time by turning the body of the turnbuckle and holding the ends).

Step 2: Installation and Reassembly

now that you have the turnbuckle disassembled you may begin the installation.

To install, take the cable end from the turnbuckle and, starting at the last vertical of the cable run, thread the cable through all of the vertical posts to the other end.

Attach the jaw to the vertical or pass the threaded termination stud through the vertical (depending on the type of termination hardware).

Now take the turnbuckle body in hand and holding it between the cable end and the termination stud or jaw begin threading both ends into the body simultaneously (end fittings must be evenly installed). Continue to turn until tension is felt

Make sure cable is through all verticals properly and is not caught or pinched.

Step 3: Tensioning

Continue turning the turnbuckle body until cable is properly tensioned to no more than 20% of cable breaking strength. This can be done with a gauge or by feel. See tensioning and termination for more.

Crimping Your Own Assemblies (hand crimp)

If you have chosen hand crimping for your project the instructions below should help you with the crimping process. Please be sure to read complete instructions before proceeding. Improper installation can result in injury! If you have any questions please call before proceeding.

Step 1: Make sure you have all the proper equipment and parts required
Tools required are Hayn Handy Crimp Tool (Nicopress #64cgmp), a cable cutter, pencil, and a sharp knife.
Step 2: If you are using vinyl coated cable it will be necessary to strip back the coating with a sharp knife as shown below. For 1/8" cable "v" should be 1-1/2" and 1-9/16" for 3/16" cable.
Step 3: Insert stripped cable into Handy Crimp fitting and crimp 3 times as shown below. Place 3 crimps, the first 1/8" from end of fitting and two more 1/8" apart. Make sure to rotate 180 degrees for each crimp to ensure straightness of the fitting.
Step 4: Attach completed first fitting at point of beginning and run cable to the other end making sure to adjust all turnbuckles, etc. to 2/3 open position.
Step 5: Attach loose Handy Crimp fitting to end position and pull cable tightly along side to measure for cut as shown below
Step 6: Repeat steps #2 and 3 for this end fitting
Step 7: Be sure to check all crimps with micrometer or gauge supplied. Diameter as measured below should be .185 for 1/8" wire and .265 for 3/16" wire.
